Origami Dragon

So let’s get started. What we have here is a book by our beloved origami dragon kami-sama, Satoshi Kamiya. It’s called “Works of Satoshi Kamiya“. Thanks cap.

Now this is simple. We have a book. Of Satoshi Kamiya works. I mean about them. With diagrams. With crease patterns. With instructions in BOTH Japanese and English! How awesome is that?!

It even has 2 of his dragons. The Ancient Dragon and the Bahamut(also known as Divine Dragon).

So, let me tease you a bit. Oh wait, timer gone off. Time to eat ^_^

I think I’ll begin describing the first model and finish with last. With pictures and stuff. Didn’t I say that the book is awesome? [Actually I was lazy and decided to do that next time when I update this review]

I’m like halfway through folding the ancient dragon. Actually it has a little history behind it.

Some time ago I posted about how I got a girlfriend with the help of origami dragon.

Well, long story short is I decided to fold the ancient dragon for her birthday. He has like 270 steps or something. A way to show off, and a very decent present.

So, something like a week before her birthday we broke up O_o

I was around step 50 I think? But that is not that important. Heh, I think this is an idea for another post. Why should I talk about my girlfriend (she didn’t dump me) in my review of the book of Satoshi Kamiya?

Enough about her already. And I assure you, she DID NOT dump me. Right…

Anyway. I said like, who cares? I’m still folding this beauty :3

I was folding origami dragons before her, and I will fold them after her. And after any other girl. Ok, ok, she did dump me. Ah well…

So, I’m on step 129? I think. I’m not sure. It looks very complex. But too amateurish. Apparently I used too thick of a paper for him.

I might have to give up on some details. I hope not though. The dragon is friggin’ magnificent.

If I don’t fold it awesome this time, I’ll do it next time.

So, back to review. What I like about this book, is that it also has a tutorial, a sort of ‘legend’ if you will.

In the beginning all basic folds, terminology and symbols used are described thoroughly, with step by step instructions.

Isn’t it awesome? I like folding me some origami, but that tutorial cleared up something for me ^_^

I don’t remember what exactly though. Not that it’s that important =)

What I don’t like about the book, is that currently you can’t get it at Amazon

Even the .co.jp one, which is weird, I think.

All the models in the book are arranged in chronological order. You can watch his progress, so to speak. From 1995 to 2003. I mean the all-mighty Eastern Dragon 3.5 we all know and love was sort of born after this book.

He rocked even at the beginning!

Every model has his thoughts and tips, which I think is pretty cool. Also, it is ok for all skill levels.

Yeah I said it!

Some folks say that this is finger-busting extremely advanced origami dragon book. And they are right!

What? They are?

Sure. The models are complex. However, even if you’re just a beginner, you absolutely can fold any model in this book.

Suggestion: start with the first one.

If you are stuck – no worries. There is an excellent origami forum with a very supportive community, that has topics on almost all hard steps in this book.

Just use the search on the forum and you will find your answers.

I do suggest you trying to figure it out by yourself, because when you do, you will remember it very well.

When you encounter similar piece like the one you solved yourself, you won’t go like “wha?”. You’ll recognize it.

I think I’m supposed to show a pic of every model diagrammed in the book with notes like in which magazine it was published with a link and stuff, just like Gilad-san, but I cba to do that right now.

Yes, I’m lazy! So I guess I just put up some pics so you folks will know what you’re buying if by some mysterious reason you don’t know already, and that will do.
